TAGUIG CITY, Metro Manila—PNOC and the Provincial Government of Dinagat Islands (PGDI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore renewable energy (RE) opportunities in the province. The MOU was officially signed on November 8, 2024, by PNOC President and CEO Oliver Butalid and Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey, Jr.
The collaboration paves the way for a series of initiatives aimed at assessing the feasibility of isolated, self-sufficient micro-grid systems within the Dinagat Islands. These micro-grids, powered by a combination of liquefied natural gas and RE technologies, aim to address the energy needs of underserved areas while promoting sustainability.
Beyond energy generation, the joint effort intends to stimulate economic activity in the province. The SGIP concept combines renewable energy with industrial operations, offering local businesses access to clean and reliable power while creating new job opportunities.
In addition to the current MOU, both parties have already laid the groundwork for RE development in the region. Last August, PNOC and PGDI announced plans to establish a solar farm in the province to serve as a power reserve, addressing the growing demand for electricity.
The initial phase of the cooperation will focus on gathering critical data about the area’s energy needs, resources, and infrastructure, as well as conducting technical studies to assess the feasibility of the proposed initiatives.
“We believe that we need the power to fulfill our vision for development. As we have the Industrialize and Innovate Fishery, Agro-forestry, Mining, and Eco-tourism or i2FAME strategy to create a more diversified and robust economy for the Caraga region, we really need power to propel us to progress,” Governor Demerey, Jr. highlighted.
Both parties have likewise committed to facilitating the exchange of relevant data, providing access to trained personnel, and authorizing the use of resources for securing administrative and regulatory clearances.
With the MOU in place, the PNOC and PGDI hope that this collaboration will become a benchmark for transformative renewable energy initiatives across the Philippines.
